THE E-MORGANETTE
From The Pastor
In the August 26th edition of Baptist Press, I read an
interesting article entitled, “Southern Baptists’ Views
of Scripture Studied.” In the article, written by Mark
Kelly, it shows there to be a “disconnect between
Southern Baptist pastors’ view of Scripture and those of
the people in their pews.”
In a study of 778 Southern Baptist pastors, 100%
strongly agreed with the statement, “I believe in the
divine inspiration of Scripture.” A second question
asked was, “I believe in the inerrancy of Scripture.”
97% of Southern Baptist pastors strongly agreed with
that statement, 2% somewhat agreed, and 0% disagreed.
It would seem, at least among the pastors, that the
long-standing “battle for the Bible” in the Southern
Baptist Convention is over. However, when asked, “In
the Southern Baptist Convention, the battle for the
Bible is over and won,” the opinions diffe5red. 52%
strongly or somewhat disagreed with this statement,
while only 42% strongly or somewhat agreed.
Brad Waggoner, author of “The Shape of Faith to Come,”
state that only 80% of adults who attend an SBC church
at least once a month strongly agreed that “the Bible is
the written Word of God and is totally accurate in all
that it teaches.” 8% somewhat or strongly disagreed. In
the same publication, Waggoner states “that only 76% of
adults who attend an SBC church at least once a month
strongly agree that “the Bible is the authoritative
source of truth and wisdom for daily living.”
Scott McConnell, associate director of LifeWay Research,
said this indicates, “While Southern Baptist pastors are
united in their view of the inerrancy of Scripture, they
must be aware that 1 out of every 4 people who attend
their churches each month consider the Bible less than
totally accurate or authoritative.”
What do you believe about God’s perfect and Holy Word?
I agree wholeheartedly with the pastors of this survey.
I believe that the Bible is God’s Holy Word. I believe
that it is inerrant. If we, as Southern Baptists, and
more specifically, as Morgans Baptist Church, are to be
people of the Book, we had better believe the Book. I
believe and affirm 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:21, and
other passages which affirm that the Bible IS THE WORD
OF GOD. This issue has been settled in my heart, what
about yours?
In Him,
Pastor Rick
